Pema Norbu is the founder of Ura Ter Yang Mushroom Enterprise, a community-driven initiative focused on sustainable mushroom collection and processing in Ura Valley, Bumthang. With over a decade of experience in local rituals and community projects, Pema has also been actively involved in mushroom collection, processing, and distribution since 2012, serving as the focal person for Ura Gewog and chairing the Annual Mushroom Festival.

Recognizing the economic potential of Ura’s wild mushrooms, which include over 25 edible varieties, Pema established the enterprise to provide local collectors with a stable market while introducing dehydration and vacuum-packing techniques to extend shelf life and enable off-season trade. The enterprise also collaborates with traditional medicine practitioners to preserve medicinal mushroom species, combining economic opportunity with cultural and environmental conservation.

Through Ura Ter Yang Mushroom Enterprise, Pema is creating sustainable income for rural households, promoting biodiversity, and ensuring that Bhutan’s unique natural and medicinal heritage is both protected and shared with broader markets.
