New York Party, September 2009September 10, 2009 - A cocktail party was held in New York in support of the Loden Foundation. The party was hosted by Caroline Trowbridge at her family house in Manhattan with the aim of raising funds for the Loden Knowledge Base, a learning centre which is being set up in Thimphu. The learning centre will provide access to a collection of books and online resources on higher education and entrepreneurship.

Carrie is a college friend of Karma Phuntsho and a friend of Bhutan. She organized the party with the help of her family, friends and four Bhutanese residents, Kinley Om, Tshering Lhamo, Tshering and Pema Tenzin. The crowd had a taste of Bhutanese food and music including Ema datsi and the party raised over $3000 for Loden. A small variety of Bhutanese artefacts were also auctioned at the party.

More applicants compete for the LEP loan in 2009 PDF Print E-mail
Following the call for application to seed business fund, the Loden Foundation received 84 business applications this year from aspiring Bhutanese entrepreneurs. The applicants include 62 men and 22 women from a wide range of backgrounds.

"The variety of innovative ideas contained in the applications indicate that the Bhutanese people are increasingly turning toward the private sector for employment", says Loden's co-ordinator, Dorji Tashi.

The board of Loden Entrepreneurship Programme will now appoint judges to do a careful study of each application and shortlist twenty five candidates by the third week of October. The Foundation hopes to fund 10 different projects this year in different parts of the country.

The Loden entrepreneurs start to pay back PDF Print E-mail
August 26, 2009 - The first cohort of the LEP entrepreneurs has begun to repay the loan they received to start their businesses. The Loden Foundation financed seven entrepreneurial projects last year with interest free loan ranging from Nu.150,000 to Nu.800,000. “All laureates of 2008 are repaying the LEP soft loans according to the schedule which is a strong encouragement for the Foundation to support increasing number of young Bhutanese entrepreneurs in future”, says Dorji Tashi, Loden’s co-ordinator in Thimphu. One of the most successful Loden entrepreneurs is Deki Wangmo.

Deki Wangmo runs a tyre retreading unit in Thimphu.
“The money I’ve received from The Loden Foundation which is without interest has contributed immeasurably to my business. I pay back every month an amount of Nu. 25,000 with my sincere gratitude to the Foundation.” Some however find it difficult to pay on time. Namgay, running a paint shop for motor vehicles, says: “I sometimes face difficulty in paying the LEP loan on time as half of my products are sold on credit and my customers pay me late.”
Meanwhile, the Loden Foundation has been receiving application for the second round of competition.
