Loden Foundation is looking for a highly talented young person to fill the new post of Loden Scholar, which will begin from 1 June 2012 or soon after that. The Loden Scholar will carry out research with an objective to create a body of knowledge on entrepreneurship in Bhutan and disseminate it through teaching and publication. The candidate is expected to work with the network of Loden entrepreneurs, teach in a college part of the time and to explore new ideas, innovations and prospects for ethical and social enterprises that may suit Bhutan in the long term.
- The candidate for Loden Scholar will be a Bhutanese, preferably with business education from a reputed institution and holding a degree such as MBA but a business degree is not a prerequisite.
- The candidate should have sound knowledge of general business practices and a keen understanding of the global economic and entrepreneurial conditions.
- The candidate will also have good knowledge, preferably some experience in business practices, and general understanding of Bhutan’s economy.
- The candidate must have strong communication skills and be willing to teach.
- The candidate must demonstrate good analytical and writing skills.
- The candidate must have good command of English and Dzongkha.
The post is intended for two years with a flexible basic salary of Nu.60,000 per month. The Loden Scholar will carry out research with an objective to create a body of knowledge on entrepreneurship in Bhutan and disseminate it through teaching and publication. The candidate is expected to work with the network of Loden entrepreneurs, teach in a college part of the time and to explore new ideas, innovations and prospects for ethical and social enterprises that may suit Bhutan in the long term.
Objective
The main objectives of the post are to:
- Enhance Loden Entrepreneurship Programme (LEP) by building its educational and knowledge components and creating a body of knowledge on entrepreneurship in Bhutan,
- ndertake a thorough going research on the entrepreneurial environment and needs of Bhutan by working with LEP entrepreneurs, other entrepreneurs, the government and other relevant organisations and institutions,
- Publish and disseminate the findings of the research to inform policy and decision makers in Bhutan both in the private and public sector,
- Network with relevant organisations within and outside Bhutan and enhance the understanding of Loden’s initiatives and activities.
Remit
The post holder will be based in Thimphu but may be frequently required to travel across the country or abroad. S/he will be answerable to Loden Board of Trustees and work under the supervision and guidance of the LEP director/s or other person/s appointed by the trustees. The post holder will work closely with the current Loden team of administrative staff and focus on programmes of capacity building, advancement of knowledge and improvement of educational services relevant to LEP. An institutional affiliation with one of the relevant higher education institutions in Bhutan will be made so that the post holder can spend some of his/her time teaching in this partner institution.
Job Description
The selected candidate for the post shall:
- Provide training and any education and advisory support the Loden Entrepreneurs may need and the LEP director/s deem necessary. See training and support guidelines below.
- Organize and facilitate educational and entrepreneurial events and programmes such as trainings, workshops, seminars and talks.
- Undertake research on entrepreneurship in Bhutan by carrying out incisive analysis. See research guidelines below.
- Teach in a higher education institution after an institutional affiliation is established.
- Represent LEP at appropriate forums on business and entrepreneurs as decided by the LEP director.
Eligibility:
- The candidate will be a Bhutanese national (citizen or permanent resident), preferably with business education from a reputed institution and holding degree such as MBA but the business degree is not a prerequisite.

Period and Remuneration
The post holder shall be appointed initially for the period of two years and the post holder may start at MP3 on the Loden salary scale and receive a starting basic salary of Nu.60,000 per month or less but the salary will be commensurate to the qualification and experience of the candidate. The basic salary is exclusive of additional allowance for travel, subsistence, benefits, etc. The post is a full time job and all terms and conditions of Loden Guidelines for Financial and Human Resources apply.
Research Output
The Loden Scholar is expected to produce the following outputs:
- Three to four research papers, one of which will be published in a peer reviewed journal
- Present the research findings in at least one conference or seminar
- Any additional output in the form of media reports, articles, presentations and participation in social networks recommended by the LEP director
Training and Support Guidelines
The post holder will organize and run a mixture of trainings, workshops, talks and lectures to enhance educational programmes of the Loden Foundation.
- The post holder will personally organize and partly deliver about 3 trainings of about 5 days in each year covering topics relevant to LEP fellows. The attendees would be mainly but not exclusively Loden entrepreneurs and may be charged a fee. Some courses can be specialised and advanced for a select audience while others can be for a general audience and the course format and schedule are flexible.
- The post holder will also facilitate and organize each year at least 3-5 lecture or seminars by external speakers including Bhutanese entrepreneurs, visiting business and development experts.
- The post holder will have access to LEP entrepreneurs and may be asked to support the entrepreneurs according to their needs.
- The post holder will work under the guidance and supervision of the LEP director, who has the final discretion to decide on the mode, place, duration of the training and support.
Research Guidelines
The post holder shall devote approximately half of his/her time to a thorough going research on specific and practical subjects related to entrepreneurship in Bhutan leading to a number of short publications which can inform policy and decision makers in Bhutan.
- The research shall explore new ideas, innovations and prospects for ethical and social enterprise that may suit Bhutan in the long term and may go well with its state philosophy of GNH.
- The post holder will formulate research questions soon after taking up the post through consultation with the LEP director. The LEP director shall have the discretion in determining the areas of research in accordance with the expertise, experience and interest of the post holder as well as the needs at the time.
- All researches will have a set of practical recommendations.
